IONCOR, one of Europe’s leading independent suppliers of battery systems, has successfully secured a new owner structure to strengthen its long-term development. The company brings in three strong Finnish owners: Finnish Minerals Group (FMG), Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company, and Pontos Group.
The new owner structure marks an important milestone for IONCOR, formerly owned by Valmet Automotive, providing both capital and strategic backing to advance the development and commercialization of its proprietary battery systems. After the transaction FMG will hold 70% of IONCOR, Varma 16%, and Pontos 14%.
- The new owner structure is a strong vote of confidence in IONCOR’s expertise and future. It enables us to continue developing our product portfolio and strengthening our export potential, while contributing to the clean energy transition in heavy-duty transport and industrial sectors, says Roberts Abele, CEO of IONCOR.
For FMG, the ownership in IONCOR further supports its presence in the battery value chain.
- FMG’s strategic objective is to develop a responsible battery value chain in Finland and to foster the emergence of new industries and expertise in the country. IONCOR is an excellent fit with this strategy, as battery system engineering and manufacturing are a crucial addition to our portfolio, says Matti Hietanen, CEO of FMG.
With significant financial backing, IONCOR is now well-positioned to continue its development, focusing on advanced battery systems for heavy-duty transport, off-highway vehicles, and the automotive industry. The company employs around 1,000 professionals in Finland and Germany, with production facilities in Salo and Uusikaupunki (Finland) and Kirchardt (Germany).
IONCOR’s momentum remains strong—gross sales in 2024 rose significantly to approximately EUR 1.5 billion, driven by higher production volumes and an expanded product and service offering. With the new funding, the company is set to build on this foundation and reinforce its position as a leading European supplier of advanced battery systems.
