IONCOR was born through the establishing of Valmet Automotive’s EVS business as its own company and brand, and now, the call to action is clear: societies must electrify to drive the global energy transition and combat the climate crisis. IONCOR, once a business area of Valmet Automotive and now an independent leader, steps forward as a premier system supplier. We manufacture cutting-edge battery systems for OEMs and for industries like construction, agriculture, and forestry machinery.

Our story

Early years

Valmet Automotive’s journey began in 1968 in Uusikaupunki, Finland, with the founding of the joint venture Saab-Valmet. Just a year later, the factory released its first Saab 96 models, setting the bar for high-quality manufacturing that would open doors to the export market. This success marked the start of a decades-long partnership with Saab, known for its reliability and innovation.

Rebranding in the 90’s

Focusing on future mobility in 2K

A significant pivot came in 2008, as Valmet Automotive began focusing on future mobility. By 2009, the company was producing the battery-powered THINK City, setting a foundation for its future in e-mobility. The acquisition of Karmann in 2010 made Valmet Automotive the world’s leading roof systems manufacturer, further broadening its capabilities.

In 2013, Valmet Automotive’s assembly line began producing the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, marking a new partnership with Daimler, which expanded to include the GLC four years later. The company’s transformation accelerated with a strategic partnership with China’s CATL in 2017, fueling Valmet’s capabilities in electric vehicle (EV) battery systems.

The launch of Valmet Automotive’s first high-volume battery production line in Salo in 2019 marked a leap into large-scale battery manufacturing.

Expanding our battery plant network

By 2021, our first battery plant in Salo was joined by a second facility in Uusikaupunki, offering OEMs the unique capability to produce both EVs and batteries in one location, bolstered by the introduction of the Modular Power Pack battery system.

In 2023, Valmet Automotive opened its third high-volume battery plant in Kirchardt, Germany, doubling production output and surpassing two million battery systems delivered since 2019. The same year, gross sales from its battery systems business topped one billion euros.

Introducing IONCOR

Looking ahead, Valmet Automotive launched the Energy Pack in 2024 to support electrification in the truck, bus, and off-highway segments, showcasing its dedication to driving innovation and sustainability in the mobility sector. From pioneering vehicles to powering the future, Valmet Automotive’s history reflects a bold evolution from car manufacturing to a leader in green mobility solutions. IONCOR was born through the establishing of Valmet Automotive’s EVS business as its own company and brand.
